EU Code Week is a grassroots movement that was initiated by the Young Advisors to the Digital Agenda in 2013. Its mission is to encourage people to discover coding and digital creativity in a fun and engaging way – from building an app or programming a robot to trying out 3D-printing or learning about artificial intelligence.
This project supported the Commission’s services in scaling up EU Code Week in the European Union and the Western Balkans to:
- Help more young people to discover and master the basics of coding and computational thinking and make them interested in pursuing studies and careers in computing/computer science and in advanced digital technologies.
- Reduce the number of 13-14 year olds who underperform in computing and digital literacy from a third to 15% by 2030 by having reached 30 million primary and secondary students in the EU and Western Balkans with Code Week activities or curricula based computer science classes by 2025.
- Upskill and empower teachers regardless of their subject / specialisation so that they can use coding concepts as a tool in their classroom in order to support Member States who want to include computational thinking/ coding/ computer science in their curricula.
- Increase the outreach and activities organised by non-formal learning organisations such as libraries
