Capacity Building and Training

Capacity building is a locally driven learning process that strengthens the ability of public and private sector actors to design, implement, and sustain outcomes.

It is central to achieving lasting impact because it ensures that knowledge, skills, and systems are embedded within institutions and communities rather than externally driven. In all areas where we work, including infrastructure, water, agriculture, climate, energy, transport, and economic development, strong capacity is what enables policies, investments, and services to function effectively in practice.

We see capacity building occurring at three levels: individual (experience, knowledge, technical skills), organisational (internal policies, procedures, frameworks), and societal (government/firm strategies, legislation, power relations, social norms). To build sustainable capacity, we focus on both knowledge and technical aspects as well as ‘softer’ skills such as leadership, negotiations, networking, and communications.

We offer a custom mix of training and learning options, including practical training workshops, virtual training sessions, interactive coaching and mentoring, peer-to-peer exchanges and communities of practice, and a train-the-trainer approach to strengthen official training institutions. Our capacity building initiatives are tailored to local needs and often include the development of training materials, manuals, and participatory learning tools.

Our tailored programmes enhance skills, knowledge, and institutional capabilities. Our training initiatives support effective project implementation, foster innovation, and build resilient communities equipped to tackle future challenges. Our services include workshops, seminars, and on-the-job training, covering a wide range of topics relevant to all GOPA sectors. We employ participatory and experiential learning methods to ensure that training is practical and impactful. By building local capacity and fostering a culture of continuous learning, we enable communities and organisations to drive sustainable development from within.
