Strengthening GIZ staff capacity for impact: Results-Based Monitoring (RbM) Training
Delivered 18 results-based monitoring trainings to GIZ teams globally, building capacity for effective project management from the design to the implementation of results-based monitoring systems.
The challenge
GIZ staff worldwide are increasingly required to design, implement, and manage complex development projects that deliver measurable results. However, many teams lack practical, up-to-date skills in results-based monitoring (RbM/WoM), limiting their ability to steer projects effectively, demonstrate impact, and ensure accountability to donors and partners. There is a pressing need for targeted capacity development to equip staff with the tools and methods necessary for evidence-based project management across diverse sectors and contexts.
Our goal
Strengthen the capacity of GIZ staff to plan, implement, and evaluate development projects using results-based monitoring (RbM) systems. Provide practical, interactive training, to enable participants to generate, analyze, and use evidence for improved project management and accountability. The ultimate goal is to foster a culture of learning and continuous improvement within GIZ, enhancing the effectiveness and impact of its global portfolio.
Our approach
Deliver a series of results-based monitoring (RbM) trainings for GIZ teams worldwide, tailored to both beginners (basic courses) and advanced practitioners (learning labs). Each training blends standardized GIZ materials with real-world case studies, group work, and peer learning, ensuring high participant engagement and practical application. Trainings are accessible online (5 days) or in person (4 days) and are offered in four languages: English (Lot 1), German, French, and Spanish (Lot 2). All trainings are designed and delivered in line with the six AIZ learning principles: varied, work-integrated, digital, collaborative, self-directed, and explorative/agile. These principles ensure the learning is participant-centered, interactive, and practice-oriented. Quality assurance is maintained through formative and summative assessments, participant feedback, and continuous content refinement. A diverse pool of experienced trainers and agile team management enable adaptation to diverse contexts.
Impact in numbers
Over an 18-month period, the project reached 200 GIZ staff members through 18 results-based monitoring trainings conducted in four languages (English, French, German, and Spanish). Of these, 12 trainings were delivered in-person in Bonn, Dakar, Bangkok, and Chad, while 6 were conducted virtually, ensuring accessibility for participants across regions. The trainings served both beginners and experienced M&E professionals, fostering peer learning and practical application of results-based monitoring tools.
Key highlights
- The project successfully delivered a total of 18 RbM trainings for GIZ teams, including 12 in-person sessions held in Bonn, Dakar, Bangkok, and Chad, as well as 6 virtual trainings.
Voices from the field
The RbM training was excellent, I learned a lot. The trainers were engaged and genuinely interested in listening to us [participants]. Overall, the level of engagement was very high.
The training content was well structured and covered all the main steps of results-based monitoring used within GIZ. It provided a useful introduction to the GIZ RbM approach and is particularly beneficial for participants who are new to the topic.
