Sahel Resilience Strengthening (SARES)

The initiative addresses food and nutrition security, disaster risk management, and social cohesion under the Humanitarian-Development-Peace Nexus, strengthening local capacities in natural resource governance, conflict resolution, and climate adaptation.

The Sahel region faces a multifaceted crisis marked by chronic food insecurity, widespread poverty, gender inequality, and limited access to basic services, all intensified by conflict, displacement, climate change, and political instability. The collaborative approach strengthens local capacities in natural resource governance, conflict resolution, and climate adaptation, while promoting gender equity and inclusive development. Special focus is given to empowering women, youth, and people with disabilities through diversified livelihoods, community dialogue, and support for cooperative economic activities.

GOPA provides an expert pool that delivers high-quality technical and methodological advice to enhance the resilience of communities and households in the intervention areas jointly targeted by GIZ, WFP, and UNICEF in Burkina Faso, Niger, Mali, and Chad. Focus areas include natural resource governance, conflict resolution, social cohesion, and food and nutrition security as well as improvement of social and physical infrastructure.

GOPA builds the skills of agro-pastoral households and producer groups in the production, processing, preservation, and marketing of nutrient-rich agricultural and livestock products. GOPA also establishes annual planning and feedback mechanisms to monitor performance, carries out training in “Do-No-Harm” and Gender with respective participatory action plans, established actionable recommendations for improving the inclusion of persons with disabilities in project activities and develops a comprehensive communication strategy and campaigns to enhance the visibility of SARES.
