EU GI Products Shine at SIAL Shanghai 2026
European Union (EU) Geographical Indication (GI) products took centre stage at the 2026 SIAL Shanghai — one of Asia's most influential food and beverage trade events — held at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre from May 18 to 20.
The EU GI Pavilion was a key element of the three-day event, inaugurated by Catherine Combette, Head of Unit for Asia at DG AGRI, and Koula Sophianou, Ambassador of Cyprus to China. Against the backdrop of over 5,000 exhibitors from 75 countries and 183,302 professional visitors from 132 nations, the pavilion drew significant attention — showcasing authentic GI products currently exported from Europe to China and bringing the EU-China Geographical Indications Agreement to life. Visitors had the opportunity to taste aged cheeses, regional fine wines and Iberian ham, with many expressing strong interest in adding EU GI products to their trade portfolios.
SIAL Shanghai itself provided an expansive platform — spanning 200,000 square metres and covering the full spectrum of F&B categories, from dairy, meat and seafood to organic ingredients, beverages and catering supply chain products, it is a true hub for cross-border trade and food innovation.
The EU GI Pavilion is part of a wider China roadshow series, supported by the Asia Partnerships Facility (APF) and jointly implemented by GOPA Worldwide Consultants and EIBENS. APF is an EU-funded, GOPA-implemented project committed to promoting the sustainable development of Asian partners.
